Christina Aguilera has never been afraid to take a fashion risk. Throughout her 20-year career, the singer has filled her videos with jaw-dropping styles and risqué runway looks, but when it came time for London Fashion Week, she took a different approach. In town to perform for Gareth Pugh’s star-studded party at London’s Royal Opera House—as well as to take in collections from JW Anderson and Christopher Kane—Aguilera went for stage-worthy statement glamour, courtesy of Pugh. “He’s just so talented, the shapes and dimensions that he uses to accent my body are signature Gareth,” shared the star, who previously enlisted Pugh’s talents for her Liberation tour and Las Vegas residency.

If the glossy metallic trench and thigh-high boots combo she wore to grace the party’s red carpet weren’t exciting enough, Aguilera kept a few tricks up her sleeve for onstage. “Detachable pieces are always great for performance so you can change up the look keep it moving and surprising,” she said before changing into a crimson bodysuit with sculpted shoulders that peeled back to reveal a crystal-covered bra.

It takes a team to bring diva-worthy looks to life, and Aguilera’s glam squad was there with her every step of the way. Hairstylist Peter Savic, who has been with her since the days of the “Dirrty” video, makeup artist Marie Bruce, and stylist Karen Clarkson, collaborated to put the finishing touches on a look that brought down the house. Vampy, and a “throwback to Marilyn,” it managed to impress even its own designer. “Christina has been a huge supporter of my work,” said Pugh, moments before she took to the stage. “We like a strong silhouette, and I think that’s something that responds [with] Christina, the kind of frame of mind she’s in, and the song she sings.” That correlation between her arresting wardrobe and the soulful sound was evident the moment she picked up a mic and thrilled the crowd.
