Oh, drama. Or should we say – UGH, drama.

Anyone who watched “The Voice” this season could tell the tension between coachesChristina Aguilera and Adam Levine was palpable and not just for the cameras. Aguilera was easily the most outspoken judge on the panel and rarely sugar-coated her opinions, coming across as overly harsh at times. Levine opted to go in the exact opposite direction, playing the nice guy.

(Which, as MTV’s resident “Voice” recapper, is not to say we think she was necessarily wrong most of the time. Indeed, it was strangely refreshing to watch a judge, you know, judge contestants, and Aguilera certainly knows a thing or two – perhaps more than any other judge on “The Voice” panel – about the technical side of singing. It was her directness and sometimes callous delivery that were controversial, not her actual opinions.)

Now, the conflict has reportedly reached a fever pitch, as Aguilera opted out of the red carpet at yesterday’s NBC Upfronts, during which Levine tweeted, “I thrive on awkward moments.” Aguilera did appear on stage with Levine and Cee Lo Green during the official presentation, though Levine stood far away from Aguilera on stage (above).

I thrive on awkward moments...
May 14, 2012 3:26 pm via EchofonReplyRetweetFavorite

@adamlevine
Adam Levine

The pair started butting heads early in the season over contestant Tony Lucca. Lucca was a co-star of Aguilera’s on “The Mickey Mouse Club” when they were tweens, though the “Beautiful” belter didn’t seem to initially remember him during the blind auditions. Levine picked Lucca up for his team, and throughout the competition, Aguilera went after him hard. So hard in fact, it seemed that other motivations might have been in play.

The “feud” became a running theme of the season, so much so that by the finals, Levine, anticipating Aguilera’s criticism of his contestant’s final competitive performance, wore a glittering “Team Xtina” T-shirt under his flannel and revealed it when the pop star expectedly started laying into the singer-songwriter.

Reports that things were even more uncomfortable behind the scenes are rampant. Did Levine and Lucca pick Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” for his final song as one last dig at Aguilera? Was she so hard on the contestant because of an unrequited teenage crush? Did Levinereally call her that backstage after the show’s final performance episode? Who knows, but there is a laundry list of rumors about the feud, and no one (especially Levine) comes across very well.

The apparent trouble between the two has fans of the show (me at least) concerned for its future. NBC announced yesterday that the show will air two cycles during the 2012-2013 TV season (both fall and spring) with a September 9 return date already announced. Open-call auditions around the country begin in July, with the Blind Audition rounds with the star judges likely to begin filming sometime in early August ahead of the premiere.

That’s only a few months away and if Aguilera’s past feuds with Kelly Osborne and Mariah Carey are any indication, she’s not exactly one to forgive and forget. And to be perfectly honest, as a fan of the show, I’m not really interested in seeing these two bicker their way through another season because of unresolved personal problems. Their job is to fairly judge the singing talents of “The Voice” contestants, not spend months engaged in passive-aggressive taunts to satisfy a personal vendetta for which they appear equally culpable.

“Community” and “Whitney” move to Friday. But NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt says there is “no intention” to shunt them to “the graveyard.”

NEW YORK – As expected, NBC will extend top-rated The Voice to two cycles each season with a fall version of the show featuring Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.

The network also will add a third hour of the show on Tuesdays from the outset. Previously, the show’s Tuesday night results show did not begin until several weeks into the season when the competition enters the performance phase.

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt expressed confidence that The Voice could weather two cycles especially with some tweaking to the show’s format, which could include different judges for the second cycle in winter/spring 2013.

“I’m not worried about it running out of steam,” Greenblatt told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. “But we’re constantly looking at the format and the way the show lays out.”

So far this season, The Voice has been averaging a stellar 6.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 15.6 million viewers on Mondays. But Tuesday’s show dips to a 4.0 rating with 10.5 million viewers.

This fall format tweaks will include extending the auditions when the show tends to pull in some of its highest ratings; insinuating the popular revolving chairs into the battle rounds; and getting to the live episodes more quickly, according to Greenblatt.

“Nobody likes to have a dip in the ratings,” he says. “And I think we’re going to be smart about how to change that.”

And viewers could see some new faces in those red chairs next year. While NBC has Aguilera, Green, Shelton and Levine locked in for multiple cycles, Greenblatt concedes that “two commitments a year is more than they expected.”

“We love them all and they’re all spectacular and different from one another,” he says. “We love the chemistry.”

Meanwhile, JJ Abrams‘ Revolution will get the post-Voice slot on Monday’s next season while Matthew Perry‘s Go On will get The Voice lead-out slot on Tuesdays this fall followed by Ryan Murphy‘s The New Normal.

This fall, NBC will bow four comedies - Go On, The New Normal, Animal Practice and Guys with Kids - and two dramas - Revolution and Dick Wolf’s Chicago Fire. The newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams earned a fall berth Thursday’s at 10 p.m. despite its low ratings.

Ted Harbert, chairman, NBC Broadcasting, told reporters during a conference call on Sunday that newsmagazines traditionally take a long time to gain a foothold.

“They’ve done some fantastic stuff this year,” notes Harbert, citing Bob Costas‘ Jerry Sandusky interview and the recent special on the assassination of Osama bin Laden, which included a first-ever tour of the White House situation room.

“They know they need to do more …to have an impact on viewers,” adds Harbert. “Brian Williams is a huge asset that we want to have on television.”

The network will open up comedy nights on Tuesdays (with Go On and New Normal) and Fridays, moving Community and Whitney to lead off the night on a typically low-reated evening for broadcast networks. But Greenblatt cautioned that he is by no means shunting Community – which has a small but devoted following — and Whitney to the graveyard. And he noted that NBC is keeping Grimm, “a show that we like,” on Friday nights next fall.

“Community tends to survive where ever it goes,” he says. “If you don’t build it they won’t come. There was no intention to extend those shows to the graveyard on Friday.”

NBC is holding Smash for midseason where it will run straight through. The number of episodes is not yet set, but NBC executives expect to order somewhere between 16-18. It is also still to be determined if the Broadway-set drama will again air Monday’s after The Voice.

NBC FALL 2012-13 SCHEDULE

Inadvertent parody siteHollywoodLifehas done it again, posting contradictory sides of a non-story and pretending it has any clue what’s actually going on.

Just days ago, the webloid claimedChristina Aguilera was likely to quit “The Voice,” allegedly because her “cruel remarks & diva antics have turned everyone against her.”

The story was totally bogus, andGossip Cop debunked it, reporting that Aguilera will indeed be with the show when it begins pre-shooting its next season in a few weeks.

But rather than admit fault, HollywoodLife now explains that Aguilera is “being rewarded for her demanding and cruel behavior.”

“Christina is a diva, no doubt about it,” alleges a so-called “music industry source” for the site. “But she brings drama to The Voice, which means ratings.”

Uh-huh.

In other words, HollywoodLife has gone from insisting that Aguilera is such a huge diva she’ll be forced to leave the show to arguing that Aguilera is such a huge diva she can’t leave the show?

Someone should really market HollywoodLife flip-flops for the beach this summer.

If anything thrives on “drama,” it’s the webloid itself, which would rather fabricate tension than report accurately.

Most Undeniable Presence: Christina’s Cleavage

There was one thing that Christina Aguilera made resoundingly clear during this season of The Voice. Well, two things, actually: her boobs. While contestants on the show sometimes outfitted themselves in racy garments, no necklines plunged the way that Xtina’s consistently did. By the last episode, if you weren’t intimately familiar with her experiments in upper, inner, and side cleavage, than you must have been watching a different show altogether.

Best Burn: Christina Aguilera Calls Adam Levine ‘A Justin Timberlake Wannabe’

Xtina really leaned into her role as antagonist on this season of The Voice, and it was kind of the best. Whether you agreed with her or not (and I frequently did not), her smack-talking always made for good TV. On the second episode, she cemented a feud with Adam that continued throughout the season, by calling him a wannabe JT. Adam must have rejoiced, however, at the best unintentional burn of the season, when fully grown adult, Jonathus, tells Xtina he’s had a crush on her since the fifth grade. Ouch!
