“I think he needed to come back last night with a home run or he faced instant elimination,” the host of NBC’s singing competition told THR about Lucca’s risky song choice.

Every week on The Voice, hostCarson Daly gets an inside look at all the performances and drama that happen during the live shows. He knows the contestants and the coaches well, and after Tuesday’s results show, he shared his thoughts on the past week with The Hollywood Reporter.

Adam Levine’s team member,Tony Lucca, gave a surprise performance on Monday in response to coach Christina Aguilera’s comments that he seemed one-dimensional and was possibly benefiting from his connection to former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Justin Timberlake.

On Monday, Lucca performed a rocking version ofBritney Spears‘ “Baby One More Time,” a move that Daly — who is also a producer on The Voice – called “ballsy.”

“From where I’m sitting and I know Tony well, Peter Gabriel didn’t quite work out for him,” he added. “I think he needed to come back last night with a home run or he faced instant elimination so it was really, really gutsy to do that Britney Spears cover.”

He added that when they watched Lucca perform the song in rehearsal, he thought, “this is either gonna kill or this is gonna bomb and Christina’s going to rip him the new one.”

Lucca’s performance on Monday was a major hit, and he was saved by America on Tuesday. “It paid off,” Daly said. “It’s the music business. It was a gamble and it worked.”

Speaking of Aguilera, the coach has had a noticeable make-under lately, showing off a more classy and polished look. Daly told reporters that while he thought “she looked fine before,” he has definitely noticed the change as well.

“She looks great,” he said. “You see it in her coaching. We all know, when you feel better about yourself, we all do better at your jobs. When she enters now, she’s got a little strut.”

Spears, Aguilera’s other former Mickey Mouse Club mouseketeer, may be on her way to another judges’ chair. As The Hollywood Reporter first reported, Spears is circling a chair on The X Factor. Daly said he would definitely be tuning in to see Spears on the Fox show.

“I’m as interested as anybody else,” he said. “I feel like I haven’t seen her communicate in mass media. Even for my radio show, to help her promote her records and get her for interviews, there’s been the conservatorship and things that have made that hard.”

Daly added that he’s known the pop princess “forever” and that he thinks highly of her. “I’m rooting for her,” he said.

You can never go wrong with a little black dress and I loved this look as we added a pop of color.

Makeup artist Jake Bailey:
Christina was in the mood for some color last night. She wanted something fun and what’s more fun than electric blue liner and giant lashes? I used an Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil aptly titled “Electric” to draw a thick line above the lashes and wing it up and out into a classic cat eye shape. These pencils have crazy staying power so you can use them to achieve very precise shapes without worrying if they will smudge or bleed. I then used a small cone shaped eye shadow brush to accentuate the crease of her eye with dark purple M.A.C. eyeshadow called “purple haze” I applied Ardell #113 strip lashes which are extra long and beautifully shaped and coated them with CoverGirl 24/7 LashBlast mascara.

I dusted her cheeks with a matte pink blush from M.A.C. called “Swoon” and lined her lips in fully with a rose colored lip liner from Urban Decay called “Wicked”. I then applied a deep rasberry gloss from MARK called “wild extravagance” to deepen the lip shade and add major shine.

Hair stylist Mark Townsend:
For the live show tonight I wanted Christina’s hair to have lots of volume and movement, so I applied a large dollop of Dove Style+Care Amplifier Mousse to her damp hair and blow dried with a round brush. I then wrapped 3 inch sections of her hair around a one inch curling iron. The trick is to only wrap the hair around the barrel of the iron, and to not even open the clamp, or you could just use a curling wand which has no clamp on it at all. Next I sprayed Sally Hershberger Body Fix Spray all over and even had Christina flip her hair upside down and sprayed while scrunching the hair so I could really get the product in there and evenly distributed. This product gives the hair unbelievable texture, very rock and roll and beachy at the same time. Seconds before she walked out I sprayed Dove Extra Hold Hairspray all over to give Christina’s hair great hold and shine. I really love when Christina gets her hands in her hair and touches it when I’m done, I think that means she really likes it!

Often times, many of the most interesting things on reality shows occur when the cameras are off.

Here’s the best of what you didn’t see on “The Voice” on Tuesday (April 24).

If at first you don’t succeed:  Producers weren’t happy withFlorence + The Machine’s first take of their song “No Light, No Light” so they made them perform the tune twice. There were absolutely no complaints from anyone in the audience as they were thrilled with more Florence, even if it was the same song.

Mingling with the fans: It pretty rare that the judges leave their seats at any time during the show because commercial breaks are over before you know it. So that’s why it was such a pleasant surprise that Christina Aguilera left her post to talk to fans and sign autographs during a break. Also, in the event you were wondering, she did the whole thing barefoot.

Dirty dancing: Before the show began, Bill (the warm up guy) plucked a number of men for the audience and asked them to dance for free “The Voice” t-shirts. Everything worked out fine until one of the contestants decided he was going to do his best impersonation of an exotic dancer instead. Needless to say, he didn’t win any item of apparel.

Tonight was a good example of how bold color can still be soft and sexy. Hope you enjoyed the look!

Hair stylist Mark Townsend:
Christina’s hair tonight is all about those sexy, swinging layers and loads of shine. I started by applying a few drops of Dove Nourishing Oil Anit-Frizz Serum to her damp hair before blow drying, the natural almond and coconut oils in the serum moisturize the hair and argan oil seals the cuticle, locking moisture in. I blow dried the hair with a large round brush to give her hair movement and then used a 2 inch curling iron on 5 inch sections of hair. To separate the curls and give her hair cool texture I sprayed Sally Hershberger Shagg Spray in my hands and then raked my hands through all the hair. I finished by spraying Dove Extra Hold Hairspray all over to keep the hair in place without weighing it down or getting sticky. I have been having so much fun creating different hairstyles for the live shows and I love that Christina is so adventurous, she is such an inspiration and amazing to collaborate with!

Makeup artist Jake Bailey:
The first thing Christina said when I saw her today was that she wanted a glossy burgundy lip! I love a dark lip and had just the shade. I first lined and filled in her lips with Urban Decay 24/7 Lip liner in “envious”. I then coated her lips with Le Métier De Beaute lip cream in “framboise creme” I created the eye look using aubergine an gold shades from my YSL “pure chromatics” pallettes adding intensity to the lashline using CoverGirl’s black liquiline blast liner.

Remember the days of Christina Aguilera‘s “Genie In a Bottle” versus Britney Spears‘ “Hit Me Baby One More Time”?

Oh, the memories…And now, 13 years later, two of pop’s biggest sensations (and former Mouseketeers) are going up against each other again. But this time it’s not for placement on the Billboard charts—it’s a full-on ratings war!

In case you haven’t heard, Brit’s thisclose to signing a $15 million contract to become a judge on The X Factor, so she’ll be up against The Voice judge on the boob tube. But will Brit-Brit be able to deliver in the same sassy styling as Ms. Aguilera?!

“Let’s face it, I’m no stranger to controversy and I’m OK with that,” Christina said on last night’s episode of The Voice.

And it’s that kind of ‘tude Xtina’s been sporting all season that has made her such a fab judge. If Adam Levine weren’t so damn hot, we’d probably pick her as a coach—ya know, if any of Team Truth could carry a tune.

Case in point? On Monday, gal shocked audiences when she cut one of her team’s frontrunners (Jesse Campbell); then on Tuesday, once again made a controversial pick, choosing Lindsey Pavao (aka the Kristen Stewart of The Voice, don’t you think?) over her competition.

Not to mention sending the blogosphere into a tizzy by supposedly giving Justin Bieber a be-yotchy look.

But that’s what we think makes the curvy blonde bombshell so valuable—she isn’t afraid to totally piss people off. “I’m fearless in the face of what I believe and I will defend every action that I take,” Christina said during the show Tuesday night.

And she’s not afraid to critique either. Heck, her go-to motto is basically “It was kinda pitchy, I’m not gonna lie.” And that prissy purse of her lips tells you exactly how Xtina feels about any particular performance. Love.

As for Brit? It’s no secret we’re obsessed with the reigning princess of pop, and we were overjoyed when we heard the Femme Fatale is so close to becoming a judge. (B.S. on our TV every week?! Hallelujah!)

But we think Brit’s going to have a far less lethal approach to judging than Christina—think the Paula Abdul or Jennifer Lopez type—sweet, innocent and totally complimentary. We have a feeling Britters won’t be making those controversial calls that will leave America up in arms.

Just look at reports that Brit reportedly put a ”no bullying” clause in her contract, insisting she wants to be the judge who will nurture new talent and she’ll leave the harsh words to Simon Cowell. Bummer, we’d have loved to see Britney unleashed.

For now, we have a feeling we’ll be bigger fans of Christina’s tough-love ‘tude. But we adore Ms. Spears and will definitely reassess once she hits the small screen. Because, either way, we’re sure Britney will find some way to keep people talkin’.
